An Emergency medical service is a service providing out of hospital acute care and transport to definitive health care, to patients with illnesses and injuries which the patient believes constitutes a medical emergency. The most common and recognized emergency medical service type is an ambulance services or online emergency service.

In some places, an emergency medical service organization may also be called a first aid squad, emergency squad, rescue squad, ambulance squad, ambulance service, emergency medicine, ambulance corps or life squad.

The aim of emergency medical service (EMS) is to provide immediate treatment to those in need of urgent medical care, with the goal of either satisfactorily treating the malady, or arranging for timely removal of the patient to the next point of definitive care. With sufficient focus, low-income countries could help to define more cost-effective emergency systems than are available in high-income countries.
